Sometimes the problem we are trying to solve isn’t the real problem at all. Stop for a second and take time to understand what the problem or question is truly about before applying a solution or answer. When faced with a difficult problem, do not assume you know the answer from the start. In life, I find there are often many solutions to a given problem. A hammer may be good for prying nails out of wood and plunging them into wood, but you should not use a hammer to pickup leaves or to unscrew a rusty bolt. An old saying goes, “If the only tool you have is a hammer, everything becomes a nail.” The way you have done things in the past may not always work for all situations. There are no stupid questions, only those you do not yet have an answer for.ģ. If there’s something you don’t understand, ask as many questions as you need. Regardless, before you can solve a problem you must first understand it. Most of the time I find people do have the same questions as I do, but for some reason are too afraid to ask them. Why? A lot of it has to do with the fear of looking stupid. We did not understand an important point during the lecture, yet nobody asked a single question. I remember many courses where my classmates sat in class dumbfounded. That is not easy to do with deadlines and pressure, but keeping a positive outlook will go a long way toward making each issue a bit less daunting.Ģ. Look at it as an opportunity to learn something new and to test your ability and wit. However, I’ve realized over the years it is the unknown that has given us, as individuals, the curiosity to try new things and aim for the stars. Sometimes our first reaction is to fear uncertainty. This was a personal demon that I faced throughout my formal education, but I survived. My palms would get sweaty, my head would spin and I would always focus on what if I failed. Keeping a stable and balanced view of an obstacle is a must. Understanding the obstacle and how to approach it takes patience. Each approach will help us in different ways. We can call ahead and ask for pointers to look for to help guide us in our attempt to get back on track. We can pull out a map and view the landscape from where we are. We can stop and ask someone for directions. If we get lost driving a car or riding a bike, we have several choices. Everyone runs into obstacles along the way. Creative problem solving is a skill that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Seeing things from various sides of a problem is a good way to get all there is out of the experience. Perspective is how you approach a problem. Talking with others will also help provide some insights and shed light on a problem that you may not be seeing from your perspective. College is a place you can learn how to change perspective and solve problems using techniques you can learn. One thing you can do, before concluding anything, is to try and change your perspective.
